SOUTH DEVONS - THE BEST MEAT IN NZ!posted by: james Donaldson, 7th Jun, 2011 9:53am
Phil Hoskin from the well known Coombe Park stud took out the supreme steak of origin prize at Beef Expo this year. Phil took away $6500 in prizes with his South Devon cross entry - winning both the overall competition plus the best of the crossbred section.
20 finalists, carved down from nearly 400, were tasted by a panel of judges at the grand final during the Beef Expo in Feilding.
The judging panel comprised Commonwealth Gold Medallist Alison Shanks, All Black Legend Richard Loe, food writer and television personality Julie Biuso, radio host Jamie Mackay and top chef, Graham Hawkes.
Each sirloin steak was assessed on aroma, juiciness, tenderness, texture and taste.
Phil is fanatical about South Devons, having spent a lifetime, showing, selling and promoting the breed and was rightly delighted with his win. He has now conclusively shown what South Devon breeders have always known - they are a very high quality meat breed and the best in NZ!
